- Suggestions for Successfully Hiring a Contractor -
As interior and exterior painting continue to be among the most common household remodeling projects, more and more homeowners hire professional painting contractors. According to the National Decorating Products Association, nearly half of all architectural paint sold is purchased by professional contractors
Choosing a reputable contractor is a very important decision homeowners must make. It is wise for a homeowner to do some simple homework before signing a contract, says Doug Vogel, of the Diamond Vogel Paint.
Vogel said that local paint stores, including Diamond Vogel, provide names of reputable and reliable painting contractors. "We want our customers to not only be happy with their paint, but also with their contractor."
"After checking with the paint store, start asking friends, co-workers and neighbors," says Vogel. "Most paint contractors know that if they do a good job, there is no better source of new business leads than a happy homeowner."
After assembling a list of three or four possible contractors, itÕs time to investigate the contractorÕs abilities. Vogel suggests asking these questions:
* Is the contractor well established?
* How long has he or she been in business?
* How many homes has he or she painted?
* What paint do they use?
In addition to quality of work, several basic business questions also should be asked. "Homeowners should always make sure the contractor has workerÕs compensation and liability insurance," Vogel adds. "If not, the homeowner may be responsible for injuries that occur on the job."
Vogel says the most important step is the one most often omitted. "Always check references. Ask all references whether the job was finished on time and within budget. Also, ask if they would use the contractor again."
Finally, put all terms and suppliers in writing before the job is started.
Vogel encourages homeowners with painting questions to contact their local Diamond Vogel Store.
