In 1967, Andrew built a replica windmill on our Orange City campus.
The Old Mill was built in 1967 by Andrew Vogel, founder of Diamond Vogel. The Old Mill represents a typical workplace and home in the old Netherlands and illustrates how the power of the wind was harnessed by generations of Dutchmen. Everything within this building is geniune or recreated in typical Dutch fashion with many of the artifacts on display brought over from the Netherlands.
It stands 50 feet tall with 16-foot blades, which rotate in a counterclockwise direction. The blades are connected to gears and pulleys that rotate the more than 120-year old burr stone grinder. With the power of the wind, the mill could produce up to 20 gallons of a paint.
Today, The Old Mill is open for tours by appointment. Visitors can experience a look at the life of a paint miller in the Netherlands and see how paint was made in the traditional way.
